Filiano surname

Post by shoshona11 »

Hello.

Does anyone have any information on the surname "Filiano?"

It was my great-great grandmother's surname, she was from Siano.

Thanks.

Hello.

Her name was Maria Filiano, but she was supposedly adopted....so I guess it is a dead end.

She married Luigi Donnarumma and had a daughter (my great-grandmother) named Agatha (Stella). Stella eventually married Joseph Difilippo and moved to Boston, (Everett) MA and had seven children.

Thanks for any help.

The fact that she was adopted doesn't necessarily mean that she lost her own surname. Children were taken in by relatives, or even sent to homes, but often kept their own identity, based upon the reason for adoption. I would write to the commune and ask for a birth extract for her and see what happens. Particularly if you know she was born in Siano. If she was born there, they have a record no matter the name.

Ufficio di Stato Civile
Commune of Siano
84088 Siano (SA)
Italy

Give them as much information as you can, but keep it simple. Good Luck.

I do not have the birthdates for Luigi or Maria Donnarumma (Filiano).
But I do have the birthdate for Agatha Donnarumma (DiFilippo). It is OCT. 20, 1873.

Joseph DiFilippo was born probably 1868. His father was Antonia DiFilippo and Mother was Rosa Rescigna.

Other surnames in my family from Siano are LEO,(BOTH great-grandmothers) RESCIGNA (grandfather), DiFilippo (BOTH Grandmothers), BOTTA (great-grandmother), and ALIBERTI.....

So you see, I guess cousins married cousins etc!!!! Seems like a close knit community!!!

Any info you can give me would very much be appreciated.....

Have a great day!

Hi Orit,

Not sure if these are yours.... but since the last name is unique, who knows...thanks for the further info, it always helps.

Linking you to Boston Harbor manifest 1902 of a small Luigi age 2

Mothers name is Usilia? Or if someone can figure it out, please let us know... Surname has been crossed (maybe maiden name) with a Donnarumma added...

See lines 18 to 21

If it is of your ancestors and would like a better copy, please let me know.

Good morning.

I just want to thank everyone for their help. This is an awesome site!

Also, thanks to mfjp and Buona for that info. Those were in fact, my great-grandparents! My grandmother (Maria) and her sister Anne aren't listed on the census, because they were married at the time.
BUT all of the children were born in Boston!

Do you have any info on the Roscigno/Rescignos, Botta/Bottos Aliberti, or DiFilippo....ALL from Siano....all seem to be intermarried.

THANKS so much!

Thanks go to mfjp. I just followed one of her leads. Try doing a town seach. I'm sure you'll find many of your family names.

Good luck.

Buona... how on earth did you find that one! This particular manifest would have been really hard to find... That really is them.... so I guess Agata and Giuseppe got married in Italy. If you look at the census I attached earlier, it says that both were married at age 29 and 26..

On the manifest that Buona found they were also 29 and 26.. and this is Agata (Stella's) first trip to the USA... and so her record is found!! :D

On one of the manifests it says that George immigrated in 1899... there's more out there...

mfjp,

I've learned a lot from my good and kind friend, Suanj. In this case, I took your lead and just worked backwards from what you found on Giuseppe.

Good work.
